Crete has many wonderful tourist facilities. That said, travellers tend to visit for the remains of ancient Minoan culture, which flourished on the island thousands of years before Christ.

Famed Minoan archaeological sites, particularly the palaces of Knossos and Phaistos, are vast. Indeed, they can take a great deal of time to fully navigate and appreciate. They’re worth the effort. Also, given that Crete has experienced thousands of years of habitation, many interesting sites are not related to the Minoan era. Visitors will encounter signs of Roman, Venetian and Turkish rule.
